A Message from the Editor:
Hi, welcome to a new animation magazine devoted to the arts of Japanese animation. It was not an easy job of putting a new animation magazine together. Trying to find talented writers and artists. In the next issue, I would like to see the animation fans respond to what they think about Japanese animation or how they like or don't like about this new animation magazine published four times a year. I am hoping that this animation magazine will be a big hit. I am trying to make a perfect animation magazine as possible, and I hope that I have succeeded in pleasing you. In other upcoming issues, we will be doing synopsis on Boah, Manono Hunter Yohko, Orange Road OVAS, Urusei Yatsura, Vampire Princess Miyu, Silent Mobius the Motion Picture, Joker Marginal City, and Macross II OVAS. I am hoping that the next issue of Movement will be a bigger hit than the first one.

In Japan, Rumiko TdkahashVs work is very popular among animation and manga fans. Her work has also achieved a sizeable fan following outside of Japan as well. Most fans of animation and manga are familiar with Urusei Yatsura, perhaps the most famous Takahashi series, for its successful blend of comedy, action, and romance - if you could call it that. Other Takahashi stories include Maison Ikkuku and a collection of stories known collectively as Rumiko.Takahashi is currently working on a series known to all as Ranma Nibun-noichi, more commonly known as Ranma 1/2.
Ranma 1/2 saw its beginnings in Shonen Sunday Comics, and has spread to an animation series. In no time at all, the series has achieved a good fan following within Japan and abroad. Since its debut, Ranma 1/2 has generated a sizeable amount of merchandise: posters, several music CD's, Videos, video games, and even a movie feature, to name a few. The Original manga series, at the time of this writing, has reached volume 18 and is still going strong.
What makes Ranma 1/2 so popular? like the other Takahashi stories, it is the stories and the characters themselves that make the series what it is. So lets take a look now at the stars of Ranma 1/2. But first, the main legend behind the story..
|
The legend qfJhusenkyo
As the story goes,Jftu-
senkyo is an ancient and
mystical training ground
hidden deep within China.
Watched over by a long
caretaker, (voice of Koichi
Yamadera, voice of Ryoga)
the training ground consists
of one hundred or more
lakes with bamboo poles
strategically placed for
training purposes. People
|
stopped using the training grounds, however, when it was learned that the lakes carried a curse.
In the past, certain things drowned in each of these lakes that person is cursed to transform into whatever originally drowned there. There are even lakes in which more than one thing drowned at a time.

Whenever the one who is cursed is splashed with cold water, the transformation will take place. Hot water reverses the transformation. Suffice it to say that this curse isn't necessarily well-received...
Characters;
Ranma Saotame; Ranma is a sixteen-year-old boy who seems to always find himself in strange situations. Ranma's father, Genma, took Ranma at an early age to train him in the martial arts. As a result of that training, Ranma has developed into a skilled martial artist. Ranma is very proud, often too proud for his own good, and disrespectful as well as insensitive, although he does have a conscience and is a gentleman, like Shutaro Mendo from Urusei Yat-surOj Ranma also has developed a debilitating fear, of cats.
Perhaps the most notable fact about Ranma is that his father took him to Jhu-senkyo. Ranma was thrown into the lakes named "Nyqn-ni-chan, " which causes Urn to turn into a cute red-haird girl. Ranma, like all the others affected by the curse ofJhusenkyo, is continously looking for a way to rid himself of the curse. (Character

voices: Kappei Yamaguchi for Ranma male. Megumi Hayashibara for Ranma female. Her major break was a small appearance in a Afaison I kkuku tv episode #24. She played a waitress and a boy by the name of Yousuke. Megumi Hasibara was also the voice of Chris in Gun-dam War in the Pocket. The long red haired lady who became Al friend.
|
Genma Saotame; Ranma9s
father. Genma behaves much like Ranma, but is far more insensitive and self-serving than Ranma. Genma will even sell his own son if he can benefit from it. Currently, Genma is looking to live out the rest of his life "in the lap of luxury " while maintaining his pride and honor. He has done this by arranging to have Ranma marry one

of the daughters of his friend, who runs a martial arts school. While Genma was eAJhusen-kyo, Ranma knocked him into "Shonmao-ni-chuan." Genma now transforms into a giant panda, communicating by handwritten signs. The curse actually works to his advantage; meaning that as a panda he can louge around and eat and won't be bothered.
Akane Tenia; At the age of sixteen, Akane is the youngest daughter of the Tendo family. She is very much of a tomboy and is capable of taking care of herself, most often by beating up the boys who want to date her but who, according to Tate-waki J&iftou, must defeat her in a fight, first. As the daughter finally chosen to marry Ranma, Akane spends a lot of time arguing with Ranma, even though they secretly care for each other. (Character Voice: Noriko Hidaka)
|
Kodaehi Kunou; AsKunou's
younger sister, Kodachi attends a private girls's school and is perhaps even more confused than her brother, who considers her to be weird. She develops a love to Ranma similar to, but directly oppo-| site that of her brother's. Kodachi's sudden appearances are made known by her bemused laughing and a storm of black roses.
|
ftr, Tafu; Dr. Tofu
is the local doctor. He is highly skilled in the martial arts and uses special techniques to heal his patients. He is gentle and well-liked. But when Ka-sumi comes to visit, the patients stay away This is because Dr. Tofu is deeply in love with Kasumi presence

Soun Tendo; Soun is Genma's friend and the owner of the Tendo Martial Arts School Soun is also the father of three son to "carry on the family tradition.1' Fortius reason, he supports the idea to have Ranma marry one of his daughters^ and take over the business.' Soun is a very emotional man, to say the least.

he is so deliriously happy that he is capable of doing partically anything, even if he is treating a patient.
Tatewaki Kunou; Skilled in the art of Kendo, Kunou is a senior at Furinkan High School He is well-known for his ego and insistance on having his way, but not intelligence. He declares in poetic imagery at an assembly that no one shall date Akane Tendo unless they succeed in defeating her first. If they dare to even ask Akane out without defeating her. He will never forgive them. Until Ranma showed up he was the best fighter. After Akane defeats all of the boys, Kunou attacks, but is defeated as well. Kunou is angered by the arranged marriage between Ranma and Akane and vows to break it, but when Ranma, as a girl, fights and defeats Kunou, he is impressed and falls in love with this strange, new girl, while still maintaining a love for Akane.
Kasumi Tendo; As the oldest of the three daughters and seemingly the least affected by the events going on around her, Kasumi has taken it upon herself to "fill in " for the family deceased mother, which she does quite well.
|
Rynga Hihiki: A man who can't seemed to remember things too well. He is a man with vengeance, Ryoga is Ranma's equal - same age, same strength - and therefore becomes Ranma s rival. Ryoga has an extremely short fuse for a temper but is shy when it comes to being confronted by women. Amazingly enough, Ryoga is best described as having no sense of direction; he can become lost at any moment. Hiis, however, did not stop Ryoga from following Ranma to Jhusenkyo and falling into one of the lakes. Now,

Ryoga is cursed to transform into a small pig. Akane soon adopts this pig, naming it "P-chan". Akane doesn't know that Ryoga and P-chan are one and the same. fjhampnm Shampoo comes from a Chinese village where the women are skilled martial artists. After the encounter at Jhusenkyo9 the Panda and Ranma-chan (Ranma as a girl) pass through the village at the time at which a yearly tournament to determine the woman with the most skill is taking place, in which Shampoo is winning. The prize: a large feast. But Ranma and the Panda start to eat the food, upsetting everyone. Shampoo comes and challenges this strange girl from the outside. Ranma eaisly defeats Shampoo, but Shampoo gives her the "kiss of death/' which means that Shampoo's pride and honor will not be satisfied until she kills Ranma-chan. Shampoo comes to Japan to find Ranma, and then encounters Ranma as a boy. Shampoo accuses Akane of helping Ranma-chan and attacks her.

Nahiki Tendn? Akane's seveteen-year-old sister. Nabiki is manipulative and extremly materialistic, willing to sell out anyone or anything for money or whatever benefits her. Her most frequent "victim, " among others, is Kunou. She uses her classmate's love for both Akane and "the pony-tailed girl," (Ranma-chan, as a girl). Aside from harassing Kunou, Nabiki can occasionally be seen manipulating Akane and Ranma.
Nabiki explains the "ratebook" of Shampoo's village to everyone: Shampoo learns of Ranma s secret. Afterward, Shampoo trains at Jhusenkyo with her great-grandmother, falls into one of the lakes, and winds up turning into a cat whenever she is splashed with cold water. Shampoo spends a good deal of time trying to lead Ranma up to marrying her.
There are still many characters who make their appearance in Ranma 1/2. This is merely an introduction.
As this article states, Ranma 1/2 is not just a story concerning martial arts; it is a comedy about a teenage boy who finds himself - or herself, as the case may be-in some strange situations and relationships. It is about love. In short, it is another success for Rumiko TakahashL

Bubblegum Crash I
Illegal Army Bv Kong Chow
After watching Bubblegum Crash Illegal Army released by AnimEigo, I found it was very entertaining to watch. The script is well written by Ariiemu The planning producer is Toshimichi Suzuki. The stone of all three Crash episodes is different than the original Bubblegum Crisis. Each story is told differently. The voice of Priss has been replaced by another voice actress played by Tochikawa Ryooko because Oomori Kinuko could not continue on with the role of Priss. The voice actress who replaced Kinuko works fine in the Crash Series. Tine opemwg scene of the movie shows a computer simulation of a city. The architecture design is so realistic. A group of power suit bandits blast their way into the bank destroying any resistance insight. Meanwhile, theA.ZX Police have taken position blocking the streets of where the robbery is taking place. The power suit bandits have broken the code to the safe. They rip out a metal door and take the gold. Hie A*D. Police have surrounded the power suit bandits. There is a war going down in Mega Tokyo between die power suit bandits and A.D. Police.
Priss \s in a recording studio trying to make the big time as a rock star with a recording company. Priss' manager says kind things to her of how wonder-fid she sings. He has the hots for her, but when he starts to get kinky. Things doesn't turn out the way he wanted it.
Linnais working with a brokerage firm making lots of money with a stock that has double in the last two minutes. She is laughing herself all the way to the bank..

Bubblegum Crash I
Illegal Army
In the next scene, Nene is upset with the two sitting down together in a restaurant because Priss is thinking of her music career and Linna is thinking about money... money...money...
Nene is worried that the Knight Sabers might as well break up because of these two going to different career choices.
The power suit bandits have robbed another bank. Leon is upset that the A. A Police cannot get their hands on the bandits. Nene and Daley are examining computer data files from the computer. Nene has pulled a datebase filed called the NEO-NATO'S which is Top Secret. The 'Illegal Army" which is the title of this Bubblegum Crash episode are a group of professional terrorists from South America, the Middle East, and South East Asia playing a dangerous game in Mega Tokyo. Lando was the leader of the Illegal Army. Nene tells Leon and Daley that he was killed in the Phillipines. The report would appear a little premature.
The plot of the episode involves two computer components from the Zone corp labs. The bank robberies were just cover up to get the components that were locked in the safe of different banks.
Why does Lando want the two remaining computer components? Will the Knight Sabers break up because of Priss becoming a singer and Lynna money crazy, working for a securities firm? What ever happened to Sylia? Will she dismantle the Knight Sabers? Sound exciting, eh, so much questions and not much answer. Tune into Illegal Army to answer these questions.

Bubblegum Crash II
Geo Climbers By Jacob Edwards

AnimEigo has released another in the "Bubblegum Crash" series of three. "Bubblegum Crash 2 - Geo Climbers " This is the newest of AnimEigo's video tapes with easy to read subtitles and uncensored plots.
The video opens with scenes of the assembly named A.D.AJVLA and pronounced "Adama" In comes a man who is thin and envious looking. He also has that slightly mean look you see in many animations from Japan. Right away you see that Dr. Yuri is up to no good. After informing Dr.Haynes that he is going down the same path that doomed the late Dr. Stingray, he opens the lab door and in step five strange looking men with assault rifles. I though they were cyborgs, but they turn out to be boomers. He steps to the side, and orders them to fire. After his robots have killed Dr. Haynes and company, Dr. Yuri says goodnight to Adama and orders the robot taken away as he closes the container door. The next thing you know, the A.D. Police dectectives are being briefed about the new type boomers that had escaped after slaughtered the entire team of technicians who were putting it together. Leon warns them that this type is a much more sophisticated machine than previous types, but they don't seem to believe him. He then mutters under his breath, the line of the film: "Unless you want people to say that A.D. Police dectectives are dumber than boomers/'
In the next scene, Sylia visited Dr. Haynes funeral who was killed in the laboratory. Dr.Haynes was an assistant to Sylia father in developing boomers. Sylia's father was the one that invented the boomers.

Geo City which is the name of this film is a giant underground city descending 300 meters into ground of Mega Tokyo. Linna, Priss, and Nene are playing golf underneath Geo City and having a wonderful time. As they finished playing golf and sitting through in a hot tub, they then head back up to the surface. Nene tells Priss that there is a second generation boomer who went berzerk. Priss tells Nene and Linna that she hates boomers.
The next scene, the girls are at Sylia's hotel room. Sylia explaines that the AI compnents that Dr. Haynes developed for Adam a are the ones that the Illegal Army was after. Dr. Haynes wanted to use the boomers as peaceful instruments. The boomer by the name of Sylia shouldn't kill people. As Sylia kept on talking about Dr. Haynes achievement of creating a boomer close to human, Priss still doesn't like the idea. The culprit behind this is Dr. Yuri a former assistant of Sylia fs father.
Adama who is a boomer who acts like a human, waken up, and has come out of his shell. He wanders around Mega Tokyo lost and confused trying to find the subway which will take him to Geo City.
Dr. Yuri is upset that Adama is gone. The computer tells him to find Adama. A relationship between Priss and Adama forms. Will this relationship last? They happened to bumped each other by accident. Will Priss have second thoughts that boomers are dumb? Will Dr. Yuri ever get Adama back and use it for evil? Sound exciting, eh. Tune into the episode of Bubblegum Crash, Geo City, for more.

AnimEigo has released the third and finale episode of the Bubblegum Crash series called "Meltdown". There is a connection to all three Bubblegum Crash episodes leading to this finale exciting, daring, un-believeable, and surprising film which I will not reveal. If I reveal the ending to this last of the Bubblegum Crash series, I will ruin the fun. Artmic should have made all three of the Bubblegum Crash series into a motion picture because each of the episodes are link together following the same idea, but with different story. I think Artmic scratch the idea of a Bubblegum Crash motion picture because they believed it wouldn't do well in the box office, and decided to make the Bubblegum Crash into a three part OVA series intented for the home video market which is a boom in Japan as well as in the United States.
The original price for this film on laser disc in yen would cost $94 unsubtitled. AnimEigo is selling it at $34.95 shipping and handling. If people started to buy more of their tapes, their cost would come down. Attention overse as animation fans. You can buy subtitled AnimEigo products by calling or faxing them for more information.
The opening scene of the film takes place at a construction site. The boomers are revolting over their master by tearing the place apart. The AD. Police have been summoned to investigate the incident. A major war is going on inside the construction site. The construction

worker told Daley after he recharged the boomers that this is what happened. The boomers throughout Mega Tokyo are going out of control revolting against their masters. Complaints are pouring in the A.D. Police headquarters.
Nene hands a compact disk to Sylia which contains files on the Database on malfunctioning boomers. Sylia is checking up on it. Sylia is concerned that if the boomers aren't stopped. Things will get worse.
At a building housing many boomers. One of the boomers wakes up. Two more also awake. A little later, one of the boomers uses his laser cannon and shoots a security guard from behind. A truck is waiting for them. A strange looking man is looking at the monitor of the truck carrying the boomers. He says, "Show yourselves Knight Sabersl When you do, it will be the end for you!"
He automatically releases a gigantic monster machine underneath the city of Mega Tokyo. What could this be? The truck carrying the boomers runs into the AD. Police headquarters. A major battle erupts.
In the next scene, Sylia explains that there is a virus rearranging the boomers' program mind. She says it uses the new "Artificial Intelligence ".Lynn says the culprit was also behind the Illegal Army and Adama incidents.
The Knight Sabers are called upon to stop the boomers from causing more damage to the A.D. Police headquarters. Will the Knight Sabers live or die? The match is not over. A surprise is waiting for them. What could it be? Sound exciting, eh. Could this be the last episode of the Knight Sabers? Will the boomers rule Mega Tokyo? Who Knows ....? Anime Towards the 21st Century bv John T. Carr III
Imagine. You're a famous manga artist. You've added to your already considerable fame as a comic artist and illustrator in your own country by taking your greatest work to-date, animating it, and then joining with some of the greating publishing houses across the globe to take your works international. You've become a household world among comics fans and animation fans worldwide.
What do you do for an encore?
If your name is Katsuhiro Otomo, you don't rest on your laurels. Instead, you continue to do what you do best: write fantastic stories of regular, everyday people in decidedly irregular circumstances. During the time that AKIRA the comic was in its final stages in 1989-90, Otomo was hard at work on two movie projects. One, the live action World Apartment Horror, is a tale of imigrants from various countries in a flophouse owned by Yakuza whose flavor goes back to his Sayonara Nippon days. The second would be what fans on this side of the pacific, appetites whetted by AKIRA, were waiting for: his next animated feature.
The Best Stuff ever Gatherered
As he'd done in his preparations for AKIRA the movie, Otomo assembled powerful backup to bring his friend from his days at Manga Weekly Action, Hisashi Eguchi, to handle the character design, while he himself handled the scripting and mechanics design. No stranger to animation, Eguchi, the creator of the long-running comedy strip STOP!! Hibari-Kun, the boxing manga EijL and the truly gonzo humor anthology Kotobuki Horror Show, while posessing a realistic drawing style like Otomo's contained just the hint of while posessing a realistic drawing style like Otomo's, contained just the hint of lunacy needed for this story. triumverate was a top-drawer cast: Bun (Urusei Xiltsura4) Itakura and Ogawa Mishio, music. Fumio (Wings of Onneamise) Iida, animation director; Hiroshi (Fushigi no Umi no Nadia)
Sasaki, art director. With the backing of Tokyo Theates Co., Inc, The Television, Inc. (a division of Kodansha publishing), Movie, TV Asahi, and Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), Otomo was ready to begin.
"Super Entertainment Animation"
It was Otomo's concern that animation in Japan was growing stale. At the first press conference in November, 1990, when asked why he wrote Roujin-Z, Otomo stated, "The world of anime is getting narrower and narrower. The day of robot anime is antique, with pretty girls being threatened by monsters. With [Roujin Z], if we can jog imaginations a little, then the genius that is "anime" vnU once again spread wide/' And, true to Kitakubo's style, the film explored one of the more urgent social issues in Japan today: the problems of the aged and shut-in. In a country where familial responsibility and respect fro the aged is paramount, what do you do when the population is living longer, living space is getting smaller, and younger people, anxious to live their own lives, aren't as ready to take care of their parents as they once were?
" Haruko-saaan..."
The heroine of Roujin Z (Old man Z) is nineteen year-old Haruko Mihashi, a student at medical school. She wears a super short miniskirt at her part time waitress job at the legendary Annie Miller restaurant; she also helps at shut-in's houses as a volunteer. At the heart of the Roujin-Z story is the "Z-project". By the year 2020 in Japan, one out of every four people will be 65 or older. The Z-project, meant to help alleviate the problem of caring for the bedridden, invoices putting all bed-ridden aged in a special moving bed. Designated the Z-001 and implanted with a 6th-generation biochip, it can sychronize itself with its user's

NEW ANIMATION SERIES TARGETS ADULTS 16-30 NEW GENRE TAILOR-MADE FOR VIDEO STORES
For Immediate Release June 1, 1992
ANIMEIGO ANNOUNCES LICENSING OF JAPAN'S ALL-TIME MOST POPULAR ANIMATED COMEDY
"URUSEI YATSURA"
AnimEigo, Inc., the leading releasor of subtitled Japanese Animation ("Amine") in the United States, today announced the signing of a license with Compass, Inc., of Tokyo, Japan, for North American home video release of the "Urusei Yatsura" TV Series, OVA's and Motion Pictures. Altogether, Urusei Yatsura consists of 196 half-hour TV Series episodes, 11 OVAs ("Original Video Animations" - short animated films released direct to video), and 6 animated Motion Pictures. In a related marketing agreement, AnimEigo will be releasing the second Urusei Yatsura Motion Picture, "Beautiful Dreamer," in cooperation with Central Park Media Corp. of New York, NY.
Targeted at a young adult (14-30) audience, "Urusei Yatsura" (loosely translated : "Those Obnoxious Aliens") is the classic Japanese animated comedy. Created by one of Japan's most popular comic-book artists, Takahashi Rumiko, Urusei Yatsura is a slapstick risque comedy where anything can happen - and doesl
"Licensing Urusei Yatsura is a dream come true," comments AnimEigo VP Roe R. Adams, III. "Urusei Yatsura is the all-time most popular animated TV show with young adults in Japan, and licensing it has been a goal of our company since its founding. We are convinced that Urusei Yatsura will be as popular with North American audiences as it is in Japan."
The first episode of Urusei Yatsura introduces the main characters: Ataru Moroboshi, the world's most unlucky teenager, is forced to play a game of tag with Lum, a beautiful alien princess whose idea of haute couture is a tiger-striped bikini. If Ataru loses, the aliens will foreclose on the planet Earth. Ataru's reluctance to being the champion of all earthlings disappears as soon as he lays eyes on Lum, and quickly reappears as soon as the game begins. It seems the aliens neglected to mention that Lum can flyl Just when all seems lost, Ataru's long-suffering girlfriend Shinobu promises to marry him if he wins. The prospect of finally getting lucky with Shinobu inspires aspiring lecher Ataru to new heights of deviousness, and he manages to defeat Lum.
Unfortunately, his victorious cry of "Now I can be married!" is misinterpreted by Lum as a marriage proposal, which she accepts.

Now the hapless Ataru has a jealous alien fiancee with an electric personality who has taken up residence in his closet; an outraged girlfriend who can't decide if she's been jilted or saved from a life of misery; the emnity of every Cjuy in town, who all lust after Lum; and is the center of attention for an ever-changing crew of wierd, whacky or simply deranged humans and aliens, all of whom have a decided talent for making his life miserable. Remember, this is a guy so unlucky that breaking mirrors would probably improve his lot in life!
And all of that is in just the first half of the first episode! Poor Ataru!
Urusei Yatsura was so popular in Japan that it generated not only the TV series, but also a series of theatrical films and OVAs that continue to be released to this day. The TV series is constantly being re-run on Japanese TV, and has also been released in a 50 LaserDisc collector's edition - something unique in the history of Television.
AnimEigo will be releasing Urusei Yatsura, in the original Japanese with English subtitles, in two tracks, one tape per track per month, starting in October. The first track consists of the TV show episodes, 4 (25 -minute episodes) per tape, released on the 8th of each month. The second track consists of the Motion Pictures (1 per tape) followed by the OVA's (1 or 2 per tape, depending on length), released on the 22nd of each month. LaserDisc releases are also being contemplated.
AnimEigo, founded in 1988, is one of the pioneers of the Japanese Animation market in the U.S. Located in Wilmington, N.C. and Tokyo, Japan, AnimEigo has released more subtitled Japanese Animation than any other company. In addition to Urusei Yatsura, AnimEigo currently has 28 titles under license, with 15 already released.
Already in release are "MADOX-01," a parody of the "giant robot" genre, "Riding Bean," a fast-paced action adventure set in modern day Chicago, all 8 episodes of "Bubblegum Crisis," a slam-bang "cyberpunk" science-fiction series, all 3 episodes of "Bubblegum Crash," the sequel series to Bubblegum Crisis, and the first volume (2 episodes) of "Vampire Princess Miyu," an elegantly chilling horror series. Coming in the remainder of 1992 are the concluding volume of Miyu, two Bubblegum Crisis Music Video albums, "Klmagure Orange Road," a 5 volume "psychic love-comedy," and, of course, "Urusei Yatsura."
