  • The Blood Is Love This song is fairly interesting, because it uses a lack of drum and other fills to build up tension in the song, where each drum variation seems to tease the listener into thinking some energy is about to come - but it keeps back. At least, that's my take.
    0:00 3/4 time
0:37 Switch to 4/4; notice the soaring guitar line over the steady riff.
1:02 This is one of the occasions where I think a lack of build-up (total restraint) actually enhances the build-up.
1:29 Notice the new guitar riff that came in along with the vocals.
1:58 The first drum variation in the whole song! Is it a fill? A changed beat? Up until now, the beat has been a steady 4/4 beat, with syncopated guitar accents. Here, the drums accent the syncopated rhythm.
2:10 Here comes the drum variation again, more regularly.
2:26 Another drum variation - these are what adds the variation to these verses, which are otherwise very steady and constant.
2:43 Switch to 3/4 for an early 70s proggy segment! Note the heavy bass.
3:21 Back to a verse - the drums are a little more varied here.
4:05 Drum build up to -- nothing!
4:16 More build up to nothing.
4:35 Another drum fill that teases you into thinking it's going somewhere.
4:52 and the song ends by slowing down and falling apart.
    5:05 or does it?
5:25 for the musically inclinded - with all the drums changes here, it's easy to move the "1" for the measures back an entire beat and still make sense of the guitar riff.
6:18 Doubletime on the drums to end!
