This doesn't seem to be getting talked about enough.
Someone sent me an article in the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/28/nyregion/28daba.html?_r=2&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink
..
It chronicles the sad stories of some women who are suffering from the financial woes because of their banker boyfriends..
They shared their sad stories the other night at an informal gathering of Dating a Banker Anonymous, a support group founded in November to help women cope with the inevitable relationship fallout from, say, the collapse of Lehman Brothers.....
The article is presented pretty reasonably - it really does seem to be about some pretty dislikable people. I decided I wanted to see what this blog was actually like. Google tells me it's at:
http://dabagirls.wordpress.com/
Their mission statement, as of 1/30/2009 (bolding is mine):
Are you or someone you love dating a banker? If so, we are here to support you through these difficult times. Dating A Banker Anonymous (DABA) is a safe place where women can come together - free from the scrutiny of feminists- and share their tearful tales of how the mortgage meltdown has affected their relationships.
Tearful tales of the mortgage meltdown? Free from the scrutiny of feminists? This sure sounds like a satire to me, something like a less funny http://www.blackpeopleloveus.com/ ....
A little asking around and googling shows that NPR seems to agree, and seems to have done considerable research to back up the fact that this is not a 'real' community blog site:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2009/01/is_dating_a_banker_anonymous_f.html
Some main reasons are the too-professionally-written prose on the page, the lack of comments on threads, and content that appears to be made quite recently.
As a last note, the Huffington Post credulously linked to the NY Times article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/28/wall-street-wives-and-gir_n_161573.html
I guess both print and electronic media can goof, eh?
