I first saw HHGTTG when I was very young, on PBS, and it was the TV series. Eventually, I figured out it was supposed to be funny. Much later, I tried reading the books, but couldn't get past Adams' hokey writing style - I couldn't even finish the first book. Now I know that part of the appeal was the acting of the players - for whom the story (in its original radio play guise) had been written.. I got to hear the radio versions of the books recently - the original ones in the 70s, and the recent (with same voice actors) 3-5 books, and must say, they are enjoyable as well.
