DogAndPanda has a stronger interest in archiving old media digitally, and is a strong (moral) support of archive.org. We also have a lot of experience converting various formats to digital media, and stay on the uncomfortable cutting edge of technology.

Some types of media we archive:

VHS video tapes
Over the years we have used different video cards to perform these archives - including the Miro Pinnacle DC10 and DC10+, Matrox Marvel G400, Hauppauge WinTV and WinTV-D, WinTV-USB2, and now the WinTV-HD1600 series. Files are either kept as mpeg2, or converted to super-high-quality Divx Mpeg4 - both of which are far superior to DVD quality.

Beta video tapes
This is a similar set-up to VHS - using whatever Beta VCR we can find that works. We currently have a working one, and are still doing some of this.

33rpm/45rpm vinyl records
This is a fun set-up - a turntable was rewired to have balanced outputs, which are fed into an XLR jack with on a pre-amp/AD converter. The signal is saved as 32-bit 48khz wavs, and then equalized using setting determined by ear. The results sound crisp and incredibly noiseless - see for yourself!

78 rpm records
For these, our set-up is embarassingly low-tech. 78 rpms are loaded onto an old turntable, and played into a sound card at 45rpm. The sound is then replayed as a higher-frequncy, 76440Khz wav file. For listening purposes, it is also de-clicked.
